STONEHENGE, A Tone Poem by Ken Whitcomb, Published by The Heritage Music Press., Copyright 1972, Grade 2, Duration 3:45. INSTRUMENTATION: Conductor 2 line score, Piccolo, Flutes, Oboe, Bassoon, 1, 2 & 3 Clarinets, Bass Clarinet, Bassoon, 1 & 2 Alto Sax, Tenor Sax, Baritone Sax, 1, 2 &3 Cornets, 1 & 2 F Horns, 1 & 2 Trombones, Baritones BC & TC, Basses, Drums, Timpani & Chimes (Bells). ABOUT THE MUSIC: STONEHENGE starts in 4/4 time, Key=Atonal, Tempo=andante. This piece has a lot of sustained tones alternating between WWs & Brasses with moving quarter note lines. The entire first page of the score is soft (Piano). As we move into the second page a crescendo brings us up to Fortissimo volume with accents on the moving lines. The entire second page of score is FF volume then we move to diminish the sound back to "P" on the third page until we get 12 measures before the end when we start crescendoing to FF for the ending. This would be an excellent piece to teach phrasing, breath control, dynamics, accent articulations, etc.
