Nicolas Sarony & Co Links from the past #38 Stonehenge tobacco card.Issued in 1926 as #38 of a series of 25 cards numbered 26 threw 50.
Back of card reads:
Stonehenge.
" The most remarkable prehistoric relic in Europe is not too bold a claim for the strange circle of monoliths which stands in lonely grandeur on Wiltshire Downs. There is evidence that Stonehenge was a meeting place of multitudes a thousand and more years before the Roman occupation of Britain. and a common theory is that here stood a" Temple of the Sun." Excavations have revealed numerous remains of the late neolithic period. and Stonehenge was undoubtedly the centre of Druidic worship. The ninety-six monoliths and mighty Downs, sacrificial altar rock stand to-day in the form believed by archaeologists to have existed in pre-Roman days ; but how they came there and the method of erection are subjects for conjecture. Their geological character suggests that many of these huge stones were
hauled four miles from Marlborough brought from Pembrokeshire, two hundred miles away.
