Published is #4 in the Famous Series by Tomkins & Bartlet of Swindon, this postcard shows the view to the Hele Stone looking out past the Slaughter Stone.
The text reads: The Slaughter Stone, Stonehenge (4) Salsbury Plain.
Legend states it was an ancient rite to sacrifice once a year a human life to the Great Fire God. An assembly was called and the person intended to be sacrificed lead to the spot. A white- robed priest, knife in uplifted hand, watched the steady rising of the sun, until the moment it's rays shone over the Hele to the Sacrificial Stone. He at once plunged the knife into the poor victim, shedding his blood.
This view clearly shows the relationship between the Hele Stone and the Guard shed (built in the early 1900s) located by the old entrance where visitors paid their admittance fee and purchased a guidebook and postcards like this one.
