Series of 32 No. 20 STONEHENGE
(Wiltshire - England)
The stone circle of Stonehenge is without doubt the greatest ancient wonder in Britain, even though there are over 500 prehistoric circles in England and Scotland alone. This circle is unique, however, in that besides the many upright stones, there are a number of capping stones - the so-called 'hanging stones' or 'henges', from which the circle took its name.
Stonehenge appears to have been built in stages, the most recent sections being completed about 1680 BC. This date is fairly certain because it has been shown that the orientation of the circle, and the positions of the outlying upright stones, are directed as markers to certain periodic positions of the sun and the moon. Other stone uprights are placed to record the rising and setting of the sun and moon over a long enough period to establish a working calendar - so important to early agricultural society involved with sacred festivals.
